Shiatsu also known as “Acupressure” is a natural “complementary” bodywork therapy in that it works together with medical indications as needed for each individual. It speeds up recovery, reinforces the flow of the vital energy of the body and harmonises the nervous system. It stimulates the energy systems of the body and, in turn, the physical expression of energy.
Shiatsu is a holistic healing art developed in Japan and based on traditional 3500-year-old oriental medical wisdom while incorporating the principles of anatomy, physiology and pathology. The theory of traditional Chinese medicine proposes that energy, otherwise known as chi, qi (or 氣 ki in Japanese), moves through the body in well-defined channels or pathways known as meridians. Each meridian is connected to an internal organ and carries the energy of that organ’s functioning. Good health is reliant upon the harmonious flow of chi through the meridians and internal organs.
The practitioner uses palms, fingers, thumbs, elbows, knees and even feet in a combination of massage techniques, applying pressure to key points to influence and stimulate energy flow in the body. Stretches are also an integral part of a shiatsu treatment and some people refer to it as “Passive Yoga”.*Shiatsu Masa focuses on easing the following conditions;
- Lower Back Pain
- Neck & Shoulder
- Muscler Tension
- Stress Relief
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Straight after the treatment you should feel more relaxed, less stressed and less achy, some people feel as though they need to take the rest of the day to rest, while others feel rejuvenated and full of bounce. The effects vary from individual to individual depending on their circumstances and constitution. The treatment will involve manipulating muscles which can lead to a release of metabolites similar to those experienced in prolonged exercise; it is a totally natural phenomenon but can lead to fatigue, without adequate hydration; so be sure to top up on plenty of water afterwards.
